The NBA is big business, which is why the Houston Rockets turn to international lawyer Mike Goldberg of the international law firm Baker Botts for its key deals. We were lucky enough to learn that Mike Goldberg was on a business trip to London and we took the opportunity to ask him for an interview. Fortunately, he managed to carve out just enough time for an exclusive interview with the Beast of Sport. We met on a sunny afternoon in June at the Waldorf Hotel in Central London where he was speaking at a conference.
To get the ball rolling, I asked Mr Goldberg what he liked best about his job for the Rockets? He said that one of the best things was being able to give Rockets t-shirts to good young bloggers/vloggers/reporters like me. (He then gave me an awesome Rockets t-shirt.)
We also asked him if he plays Basketball himself? He said that he did and that he loves to play. In fact he told us that the last shot he took was a three pointer at Toyota Center (The home of the Rockets), but then he said he just walked off the court because there was no way he was taking another shot in case he missed!
We then got down to the serious questions and I asked him if he gets any special perks (like good seats, talking to players and stuff like that). He responded that he did. One of the cool things is that he gets to park his car were the players park their cars. He also gets to have front row seats so that he can get up close to the players and listen to the manager’s team talk (which is extremely cool).
I was curious to find out what was the most exciting thing he ever did as a lawyer for the Rockets, so that was my next question. The answer was really interesting. Mr Goldberg was involved in the the signings of Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The Yao Ming deal was especially interesting because, although it was not a trade, he had to go to China and conduct negotiations with the Chinese Government. Even here at the Beast of Sport HQ we think that must have been so cool! Here is some press from the time about Mr Goldberg’s role in the signing: http://sports.espn.go.com/nbadraft/story?id=1399417
Next I asked him what was the most the Rockets had ever agreed to pay a player? He told me that the salary cap was $20 million, meaning that 1 player could cost at most 20 million a year, but he added that the salary cap was going up somewhere along the lines of $50 million.
We were then curious to learn what the difference was between a lawyer and an agent. He said that he usually negotiated with the players’ agents, so they are on the other side of the negotiations.
Then to cap it off, we asked if the players’ contracts are secret or can everybody read them? He told me that everybody cannot read them but, most of the time, the information leaks out one way or another. It is normally the player’s agent that leak the salary information. You also have to give the contracts to the NBA so they can approve them.
Mike Goldberg is a big part of the Rockets organization and we are so grateful that he gave us an interview (and a cool t-shirt).
