Baseball:  AL Wins Again

On Tuesday, the MLB All Star Game took place in Cincinnati at the Reds home ground.

The All Star Game is when the best players in baseball at the mid-point of the season get chosen to be an All Star. Sometimes, even if you are selected you might not play because there are 34 people in your roster.

The best players in the American League and the best players in the National League get to play against each other every year at around this time. If you are in the American League and you are an All Star than you play for the AL.  If you are in the National league and you are an All Star than you play for the NL.

This year the two rosters were stacked and it was a great game.  Mike Trout blasted a solo shot and so did Andrew McCutchen. Like last year, the AL won the game 6-3 and David Price who is having an outstanding year got the win for the AL. Clayton Kershaw, the ace for the Dodgers, took the loss for the NL.

UFC —    McGregor Backs Up Talk

Conor McGregor defeated Chad Mendes in a blood soaked battle in which McGregor looked a bit shaky at the start but came through in the end.

Mendes replaced Jose Aldo on two weeks notice because Aldo had a bruised rib. Mendes put on a good show and won the first round 10-9 according to the judges. In the second round Mendes knocked Conor to the ground a few times and actually got McGregor in a choke hold and waited for submission. But McGregor put his agility to good use and managed to wriggle out of the choke hold and stood right back up. Instead of touching gloves McGregor now showed why he is so good. He went straight on the attack hitting Mendes repeatedly with his left hand. Mendes fell to his knees and eventually the referee had to pull apart the two indicating that McGregor had won by TKO (technical knock out.)

McGregor actually had an injured knee but still managed to defeat Mendes for the world championship belt. McGregor had trash talked Chad Mendes a lot before the fight so all the pressure was on him. He said that he would “Eliminate Chad Mini Mendes (his real fighting name is Chad Money Mendes) and kick Aldo’s butt.” It was a defiant milestone in McGregor’s career and I am sure that he was happy too keep his winning streak going. McGregor made a statement referring both to himself and the Irish people.  He said  “We’re not here to take part. We’re here to take over” and that is something that he is definitely doing in the UFC at this moment in time.

Tennis: Djokovic vs Federer

Through my generation the same players have dominated the game of Tennis. Djokovic, Murray, Nadal and Federer. They have played the game with passion and skill. Now arguably the best of the big four Djokovic and Federer will throw down in a serious showdown. Djokovic won last year and has been cruising without error through the whole tournament and looks unbeatable. Federer for the long time he has been around has actually proven that he is almost invincible. Federer plays hard and his strokes are beautiful and powerful. Djokovic is fast, flexible and strong. Both have defeated the majority of their challengers in the minimum three sets preserving their energy. They should both be in top form because they have not been worked that hard throughout the tournament so it should be a long entertaining match. The result is impossible to predict and it should be a excellent match of Tennis.

SOCCER: Women’s World Cup – USA Mission Accomplished

By the Deputy Beast of Sport
On July 5, Japan and the United States women’s soccer teams came back together in a re-match of the Women’s World Cup Final. Four years ago, the teams drew in 120 minutes of play (90 minutes full time plus 30 minutes extra time), but Japan managed to win 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out. Yesterday, USA wanted revenge and smashed them early with style earning 4 goals in the first half. This was helped by Carli Lloyd’s (my Beast of Sport of the Day) hat-trick (which means 3 goals) including an amazing speed shot from the halfway line. In the end, USA beat Japan by 3 points (5-2) earning the women’s team their first World Cup win in 16 years. How cool is that?

Soccer:  Sanchez Comes Through Again

On Sunday July 5, Chile and Argentina clashed in a highly anticipated Copa De America final. The two teams fought themselves to a standstill as both teams failed to score in the regular 90 minutes and the additional 30 minutes of added time. Bravo (Chile’s goalkeeper) almost managed to keep a clean sheet through the whole game only allowing one ball to hit the back of the net. With the score 3-1 to Chile, Alexis Sanchez stepped up to try and give Chile their first cup in 99 years. Sergio Romero tried to stop the shot but was fooled by a bad panenka penalty. (A panenka is a chip shot right down the middle designed to throw off the goalkeeper.) Sanchez scuffed the shot, but still managed to score the decisive goal giving Chile the much-coveted final win.

UFC — Is Aldo Scared?

Yesterday I told you that McGregor and Aldo would be fighting it out for the UFC ultimate championship on July 11. Guess what? Jose Aldo just pulled out of the fight because of a rib problem that is supposed to be fine as the doctors informed him that he would be heathy to fight McGregor. There is a lot a controversy directed at the injury because, as I said, the doctors told Aldo that he would be heathy to make this fight. So is Aldo scared? He could be because McGregor is burning with confidence and is positive that when or if the fight happens he will be in total control. Instead of Aldo, Conor will be fighting Chad Mendes a talented fighter but not the one McGregor was preparing to fight. Aldo might have pulled out to confuse McGregor and, when he thinks the fight is off, Aldo could come right back and say I’m ready to fight. It is still going to be a good fight between McGregor and Mendes so stay tuned for the outcome of this heavyweight showdown on July 11.

UFC– Countdown: McGregor vs Aldo.

As you may have heard, Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo will be fighting for the UFC ultimate championship. McGregor is sure that he will have Aldo knocked out by the 4th minute of the fourth round. Aldo however might be trying to put McGregor in a weird mindset as it is thought that Aldo is faking an injury to push the fight to a later date. McGregor is very confident and if you look at this link you’ll see that Conor is even willing to tell how he is going to attack Aldo. McGregor said that he will “charge at Aldo palms out and land shot by shot.”  McGregor also ensured that Aldo will crumble under the lighting fast punches and feet work that he applies in his fights.

Aldo’s heat is starting to rise as McGregor is constantly in his face and insulting him on live television. Aldo has won the championship many times but Conor said that he knows that Aldo has a weak spot in his ribs and Conor followed that up by saying “There are many ways I can beat Aldo.” The fight is on July 11 and I will be curious to see who will prevail. The young master or the old veteran. McGregor Aldo the countdown is on.

Boxing — Katie Wins Again

By The Deputy Beast of Sport

Katie Taylor, the Irish boxing star, won gold in the 2012 Olympics in London. The DBOS and the Beast of Sport were lucky to see her smash it to win the best prize in Women’s boxing. Katie hasn’t lost it since the Olympics and is still at the top. Today she won gold again at the first annual European Games in Baku. I’m sure she qualifies as a Beast of Sport!

Baseball:  Must Have App

If you are a Baseball fan, I bet you will love the sound of this. At Bat is a beast app that allows you to check scores, replay full games if you cannot watch them, look at standings and watch live games. This is really helpful if you are not in America as you can always replay any game that you missed. If you are busy and you miss a baseball game that you want to watch,  you can always check the score and then replay it. The only down-side is that you need WIFI to operate it so being the baseball fan that I am I struggle when I don’t have WIFI. Another really cool application, is that there is something called pitch tracks which allows you to see how many innings the pitcher has pitched what kind of pitches he is throwing and how fast the pitches are. Sadly the app costs 18 pounds a month. In my opinion it is totally worth it and super cool if you want to watch a baseball game.
