Conor McGregor defeated Chad Mendes in a blood soaked battle in which McGregor looked a bit shaky at the start but came through in the end.
Mendes replaced Jose Aldo on two weeks notice because Aldo had a bruised rib. Mendes put on a good show and won the first round 10-9 according to the judges. In the second round Mendes knocked Conor to the ground a few times and actually got McGregor in a choke hold and waited for submission. But McGregor put his agility to good use and managed to wriggle out of the choke hold and stood right back up. Instead of touching gloves McGregor now showed why he is so good. He went straight on the attack hitting Mendes repeatedly with his left hand. Mendes fell to his knees and eventually the referee had to pull apart the two indicating that McGregor had won by TKO (technical knock out.)
McGregor actually had an injured knee but still managed to defeat Mendes for the world championship belt. McGregor had trash talked Chad Mendes a lot before the fight so all the pressure was on him. He said that he would “Eliminate Chad Mini Mendes (his real fighting name is Chad Money Mendes) and kick Aldo’s butt.” It was a defiant milestone in McGregor’s career and I am sure that he was happy too keep his winning streak going. McGregor made a statement referring both to himself and the Irish people. He said “We’re not here to take part. We’re here to take over” and that is something that he is definitely doing in the UFC at this moment in time.
